Pomi (Kham, Eastern Tibet)

Traveling from Nyingtri to Pomi, and it was a day-long journey traveling through the DEEPEST gorge in the whole world - The Tsangpo Gorges.

While I was on the road, my friends told me that this was the deepest gorge in the world and is 5000m deep which is 3 times the depth of Grand Canyon, and I couldn't really accept it, as I had been to the Grand Canyon twice and this gorge does not "half" as impressive as the Grand Canyon.

Quoting from the Lonely Planet:

"With 7756m Namche Barwa and 7151m Gyala Pelri towering over either side of the gorge, only 27km apart, the gorge records a depth of 5382m (almost three times the depth of the Grand Canyon), with a length of 496km."

I figure out that the key word is "only 27km apart", the scale is just "obscene"!!
+++++++++++++++

This was the Jeep that brought us around....

Raging Prayer Flags - (Elevation of 4515m, on the way from Nyingtri to Pomi)

Place where the Flag-sellers sleep.

At 4500m height, it was already very cold in the late morning. I was wondering how do they survive the freezing windy night. It was quite a distance from the nearest town. To earn a couple of bucks by selling flags, they were willing to endure all these hardships! Respect!..... but, I still didn't buy the flags.

So idyllic

Prayer flags at the bottom of the cliff.

A couple of weeks ago, a good delivery truck dropped into cliff. The road condition was quite appalling at times, with muddy road and facing the possibilities of landslides. It was not easy to earn a living in Tibet. - (From Nyingtri to Pomi)

Crossing the river...

Does it look like the bottom of a 5000m deep gorge?

There were lotsa military trucks!!!

Accident right in front and it was totally jammed up... and as a typical "KPO" Singaporean, I went forward to understand what's happening, not trying to find out the car plate number to buy 4D.

There was a landslide, and the truck was trying to avoid it by swaying to its left. It's a close shave! Luckily, nobody was hurt. The military personnel was trying the clear the landslide, as shown on the left.
